Wayman Tisdale -- Fall Reveals Cancer

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2818951. Beat out Charles Barkley for a spot on the 1984 Olympic team. Great, great college player.

Serena Williams -- Under 185

I was watching a re-run of a tennis match from 3 years ago the other day.........no wait!! It was an actual March 2007 Serena Williams match!

Serena is down 20 from her Aussie Open weight and has almost reached the point where she doesn't shake when she walks.

Kudos to Serena!! At 165 or below she might go on a winning streak such as the tennis world has not seen since Graf exploded after the Seles stabbing.

Pictured -- Big Serena at 205 in Australia; small Serena at about 165 in a photo shoot. At both dates she was listed at 145.

Courtney Love -- Um, thin

Why do I get the feeling that saying "macrobiotic diet" is the same as when an athlete says "vitamin regimen"? I mean, come on.....you have been 165 pounds for 6 years, you start eating rice and fish and go down to about 120?

Sligh-O-Nara

Trying to regain readership after a busy few work days (see posts below), I have to note how disappointed I was in the departure of Chris Sligh.
Not disappointed in the voting, but disappointed in Sligh. I can only recall one other times that someone I thought would go much further just couldn't seem to get out of their own way: LaToya London. But I guess being a good singer doesn't do you much good if you can't put it together for the public when it counts.
Pictured -- Sligh pointing to the tear that fell when the local Hardee's ran out of gravy during a breakfast visit.
If Scarnato and Stacey are the next 2 to go, we are looking at decent statistical possibility of a Blue state winner!

AOL -- 21 Characters we would like to date

http://movies.aol.com/movie-photo/celebrity-movie-character-crushes-staff. Kelly LeBrock, Jessica Rabbit of course. But the selection of Karen Allen's ROTLA character is pure genius.

As Moe Szyslak said to a female suitor on "The Simpsons" (before figuring out that she WASN'T insulting him) "You ain't no Karen Allen yourself!!!"

AM, Wife of HM, Turns 41

Despite being about 5' 8 1/2" and pudgy, I was fortunate enough to snap up a tall, thin good-looking wife. She turned 41 on the 28th, so, for a short period of time we will be 1 year apart in age.

I struggle to find a celebrity who looks much like my wife (Accounting Maven). But if you look at old pictures of Diana Spencer or 1980s pics of Susan Sullivan, you get a pretty decent idea. So, just picture a 1980s Susan Sullivan married to a 1990s Wade Phillips............

NBA League Standings

http://aol.nba.com/standings/team_record_comparison/conferenceNew_Std_Cnf.html. Having won 4 straight games, it looks like the Clippers will step up for that 8th spot in the West.

In the East it looks to me like 36 wins will take that final playoff spot (36-46.....in the playoffs......nice). Orlando and Indiana and the Nets appear to want the spot. Now that Isiah's job is safe in New York, it appears that his team does NOT want the spot (30-39, lost 3 straight, coming off a loss to Cleveland that can only be described as "gutless" -- http://aol.nba.com/games/20070323/NYKCLE/boxscore.html).

But the Knicks have Orlando tonight, so anything can happen.

Also in the East, Chicago may catch Cleveland (side note -- there is no LESS enjoyable team to watch in offense than the Cavs, anywhere, I believe Mike Brown learned offensive basketball from the late Bill Musselman). If Chicago passes Cleveland it could get a #2 seed.

And wither my Wolves??? Well, their buzzer-beater win over the Blazers moves them to 30-39, same as the Knicks, tied for the 10th worst record in the league. If the Wolves pick is #11 or below, they lose it to the Clippers (even if the Wolves don't make the playoff). Losing that pick to the Clippers also triggers the Celtics' right to a #1 pick two years later......So the Wolves are in about the worst possible situation right now. Surprise.

Tar Heels Prove to Be Choking Dogs

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=274000030. Typical Carolina choke job. I have no idea what Tyler Hansbrough had lodged in his throat/mouth, but it was keeping him from breathing or playing D as the game wore on. I am sure that Heel fans were heard to say during the collapse, "[unintelligible mumble/drawl]..........Go Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels!!!!"

I guess this might be the best time to note that I hate UNC and that I even forbid my son, PM, from buying or wearing any UNC garb. So maybe I am not the most objective of scribes on this one.

The Good, The Bad, and the Tubby

Minnesota hires Orlando "Tubby" Smith. I will give you both sides:

Good Hire Argument -- The Gophers were a joke and Tubby's name gives them instant credibility. He won the title at UK and he went to the Elite 8 multiple times. He won at Georgia and at Tulsa. He will recruit far better than Monson or Clem ever did, and he will be able to recruit some role players who will be 4 year guys here whom he was never allowed to recruit at UK.

Ticking Time Bomb Argument -- You have hired a guy whose only true success at UK came when Rick Pitino had stocked the cupboard with the bluest of blue chips (1998). Once Tubby had to recruit for himself, even the UK athletic department's "don't ask don't tell" policy (Eddie Sutton/Dwayne Casey/Chris Mills anyone?) wasn't enough to get Tubby to the Final Four. Minnesota is known for self-reporting even the most minor of infractions.......not exactly a good recruiting atmosphere.
You play for Final 4s and championships. At UK with his own guys Tubby has none. He lost more games in the last two years than any non-probation UK team. What makes you think that he can take over a 9-22 squad where the cupboard is completely bare and win even 11 games? He has no MN ties, so what makes you think he can stop the Badger recruiting train that now runs through the entire 11-county metro area of the Twin Cities? Sure you are happy now, but what happens when he wins 11, 13, and 12 games over the next three years? Will that be $5.1MM well spent?

Truth by Analogy -- You are the 3rd ugliest guy in a good frat. Your standing with the ladies on campus has sunk to the point where your girlfriend is a 400 pound girl who physically assaults you. You have dumped her and after 4 months as a single you have picked up a 190 pounds girl who is nice to you. Are you going to be happy? Damned right you are. Now, in a little while you will notice that the girl you have has some obvious faults, but I don't think Scarlett Johansson was waiting naked outside your door with a bottle of wine and some baby oil.

My Grade -- B+

One Man's take on McRoberts to Pros

http://dwil.wordpress.com/2007/03/23/josh-mcroberts-jump-to-nba-reveals-much-about-mike-krzyzewski-and-coach-k/. An interesting take at that.

Look, Josh McRoberts is a TERRIBLE defensive player and he isn't a reliable scorer. He would make a decent 8th man on a .500 team in the NBA. He might make a good 10 minute backup for Stoudamire as a Sun because he can take passes when wide open and dunk them.

But the truth of the matter is that McRoberts' draft stock was sinking every year at Duke. He was a top 3 pick as a high school senior, a top 10 pick before last year, and he is barely hanging on as a top 20 pick so far (before workouts, where NBA squads will almost certainly realize that he really isn't very good -- but see Mike Dunleavy, Jr.). The more he plays, the lower his stock drops.

So, is Coach K lying when he says the "time is right" for McRoberts? No. If he wants to stay in Round 1 and get guaranteed money, he has to leave. If Duke wants to get the HS kid from West Va., they need to rid themselves of McRoberts.

The time is right.

NCAA Tourney Loses Out to "Ugly Betty" et al.

http://entertainmentnow.wordpress.com/2007/03/23/broadcast-tv-ratings-for-thursday-march-22-2007/.

I guess that while I am the only one who will come out and SAY I am not enjoying this tourney, other folks are simply turning the channel to see what's going on over at October Road!

Last night I watched 40% of games while also watching a high school tourney game and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Maybe CBS could convince the NCAA that 10 minute video replays aren't real conducive to fan interest?

Last night Memphis/A&M -- ball is thrown in with 3.1 left. Memphis guy tips the ball. The second the ball hits the floor the ref blows his whistle (he is 40 feet away, but his judgment is the ball hits immediately out of bounds). No time runs off. So, what would they do in an NBA game? Steve Javie or Joey Crawford would say to run off 0.3 seconds (roughly the time of a tip) and put 2.8 on the clock. What do they do in the NCAA? Review the call, determine that the ball did NOT hit immediately out of bounds, guess that 1.1 seconds ran off the clock before the guy at the scorer's table reached out and touched the ball (which he had a perfect right to do......THE WHISTLE HAD BLOWN!) and give A&M 2.0.

Is this proper? The call was made, the whistle blew, play stopped. Can you reverse an out of bounds call on replay? If so, technically, isn't this an inadvertent whistle during a loose ball? Held ball........possession to.......????

CBS announcers and people back at the studio offered up........not much.......

Kobe -- Um, Scorer

Once again, I must say how thankful I am to Wilt Chamberlain for keeping Kobe's name out of the NBA record books (Wilt with 12 straight 50+ games in 1961-62, the year he averaged 50.4 points a game. Wilt also has 32 games over 60 points)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Basketball_Association_players_with_60_or_more_points_in_a_game

Whitlock on College Basketball

http://sports.aol.com/whitlock/_a/basketball-football-rotting-as-we-watch/20070322103209990001. The move to AOL has done something to Whitlock.....whatever it is, I like it.

From 1980 to 1999, the NBA was ruled by teams whose best players either never attended college or whose teams reached the NCAA Finals (win or lose):

Magic/Bird/Moses/Magic again/Bird again/Jordan/Hakeem/Jordan again.

Since 1999 things have been much more sketchy for my theory. You could argue that Tim Duncan and David Robinson and Dwayne Wade should "count" because they took undertalented teams to better college marks than that team deserved. But that is kinda cheating. The Pistons had Rip Hamilton (UConn title 1999) and Sheed (Final 4, 1995).

The bigger problem in the analysis is Shaq. Shaq has 4 rings. He was MVP of the Finals 3 times. He attended LSU for 2 years and they never won anything in the Tourney. So, was it Kobe who won those 3 rings (keeping my theory alive)? That ignores reality.

So, I will go with the theory that to win an NBA title you need to be led by a star of a great college team, a high schooler, or Shaq's equal.

Tony LaRussa - Cautious Driver

http://sports.aol.com/mlb/story/_a/la-russa-arrested-for-suspicion-of-dui/20070322091209990001. He was just waiting to make sure the intersection was clear.

I now, of course, have to tell my bizarre Tony LaRussa story -- I was schedule to take an 11AM deposition in a St. Louis hotel conference room about 10 years ago. So, I fly in to St. Louis early in the morning. The hotel is very near the airport so I get there early and walk in.

Sitting on the tile floor of the entry way (between the two sets of glass doors) -- Tony LaRussa. He is eating some sort of danish or something, sitting on the floor, apparently just woke up and is waiting for a ride somewhere. I can't help but chuckle. I say, "Good morning, Tony." He laughs a little and says, "Good morning." I thought THAT was odd. Imagine what the police must have thought here....

As I note with almost every drinking/DUI story -- "Forget about the check, we'll get Hell to pay." http://www.lyricsdomain.com/1/acdc/have_a_drink_on_me.html

A Sad Commentary for Middle-Aged Guys

http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove. Put the gun away fellas, put the gun away.

Worst....NCAA Tournament......Ever

I declare this the worst NCAA Tournament ever. I mean, I love basketball and I am willing to watch almost any game (caught DePaul/KState last night as well as the Marist women) but this tourney lacks any significant entertainment value.

Look at the matchups for the Sweet 16:

Butler v. Florida -- Well, unless you recall Butler's near victory in 2000 (and almost no one does) there is no rivalry here. Butler might be a nice Cinderella, except there were times when they were in the top 15, so that ain't happening. Remaining angle: Could FL repeat as champs?

Vandy v. G'town -- John Thompson III just seems like too nice of a guy to invoke the old "Hoya Paranoia" or the image of a band of rough thugs that his dad cultivated. Vandy has a small enrollment but they play in the SEC, so don't expect a "tiny Vandy" story. So what do you have left? Well, two nice schools where kids can get a nice education. Yawn. Remaining angle: I guess Gtown "Return to Glory" which is a glory you will recall only if you watched during the Reagan/Bush I administrations.

UNLV v. Oregon -- UNLV had a successful (running) rebel program back in the 1980s and 1990s, but now they are coached by the bland Lon Kruger and led by his 35 year old son. I guess they are the lowest seed remaining, but I don't think you get much "pop" out of "Will underdog UNLV upset mighty Oregon?" Remaining Angle -- Ducks' nickname and garish uniforms.

USC v. UNC -- The clever lettering issue (uSc and uNc)?? Does anyone really care that Tim Floyd failed in the pros? I mean, what recent college coach hasn't? Tar Heels reloading could be a good story..........if it wasn't UNC.......who always wins anyway..........Remaining Angle -- Um, USC chance to go back-to-back if they can win and get O.J. Mayo in school next year.

Southern Illinois v. Kansas -- Redemption for Bill Self? No one cares. Redemption for KU after Roy Williams won without KU? Good story within 200 miles of Topeka. SIU has Butler's same issues. Remaining story lines -- None.

Texas A&M v. Memphis -- Who cares? (I am put in mind of Homer Simpson re: a soccer match, "I will just die if Uruguay doesn't win." Are there 400 non-alums in America who care who wins this game for anything other than their office pool?)

Pitt v. UCLA -- OK, now THIS game actually has an angle (UCLA coach was the Pitt coach and left for UCLA). So, great, we have 1 out of 7 so far -- the "Effing Traitor" angle.

Tennessee versus Ohio State -- Bruce Perl once took his shirt off for Pat Summitt (as Moe on the Simpsons said, "Even I ain't hoping for porn there.") Greg Oden is big. Thad Matta coached at Xavier (oops, one round too late). Waterways connect Tennessee and Ohio (maybe Billy Packer could be placed on a rowboat and force to row between the states?). Remaining angle -- Will Oden go pro if they lose?

Heather Mills -- Formerly Hot

Dial Idol -- Losing Its Effectiveness??

http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp. Sanjaya was actually in the Bottom 2, yet dialidol had him at #5 at worst??????????

What happened? Here is my thought -- the rules listed at the end of Idol last night included a note that the producers of the show reserve the right to identify and disqualify any votes they deem to be sent by a "power dialing" method. This is also stated in the show rules about 60% of the way down the page: http://www.americanidol.com/faqs/

Now, if the producers go through and disqualify a ton of votes for Sanjaya or any candidate endorsed by www.votefortheworst.com, who is really going to complain? I anticipate that what the producers COULD do is identify ONLY those candidates who suck and are somehow still on the show. They could then toss out a ton of votes for ONLY those candidates and not even review the voting for the people they prefer.

But that is just my cynical view of the world. I am sure that that would never really happen......

Ernie "The Big Cat" Ladd, Dead at 68

Back when the world was young and the earth's crust was still forming (OK, circa 1972), I first discovered professional wrestling flickering onto my dad's 14 inch black and white TV on some obscure UHF station. With my 5 year old brother, I would watch the WWF matches out of Allentown, PA and we both loved Johnny Powers: http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBios/powers_johnny.html and hated the heels Waldo Von Erich and Ernie "The Big Cat" Ladd.

Ladd was such a great performer that he really scared the bejesus out of a little 8 year old kid in upstate NY, and I often wondered how they ever let him play pro football when he was obviously such an awful bad-ass.
I only got to watch Ladd for 2 years before my mom made us stop watching wrestling (cuz bro got injured for about an hour -- we would return around 1977 and watch Greg Valentine and Ric Flair go at it on Channel 4), but it always mystified me as a kid why: 1) Ladd's injured thumb (from "an old football injury") never healed in the 2 years I watched, 2) Ladd treated the serious and chronic injury by just wrapping tape around the thumb; and 3) why if it hurt so much did he use it to jam it into his opponents' throats and choke out his opponents????
RIP, Big Cat..............

Charley Rosen -- No Fan of KG

Wow. I guess Charley won't be flying into MSP to have dinner with Kevin any time soon. And I thought that Shaq's 32 point performance was the key to the Heat victory!

A pretty good summary of Rosen's opinion: 1) KG is a puss; 2) KG pads his stats with meaningless technical free throws and stats garnered at the end of blowout games; 3) the main reason the Wolves lose is because KG won't fight Udonis Haslem for position; 4) KG would be better if he had a good player to carry the load as a star interior player like...........Nene (pictured -- a nene).........or Eddy Curry (also pictured).................

PM -- Second Place in the first State Tourney

Now, the top 6 teams in the state were in a higher bracket, but PM's 5th grade squad did manage to take 2nd place in the next bracket this past weekend, going 4-1 and being tied at halftime of the title game before collapsing in the 2nd half.

There were about 4 good teams not in attendance, but PM's squad beat a team who had beaten them twice, and in all they beat 4 good large-suburban squads to reach the finals before falling to the 8th best team in the state. So , we will take it.

Isiah Thomas -- Contract Extended by the Knicks!!

Dolan shook off the criticisms of Thomas' work in the front office, saying "nobody's perfect."

For example, Idi Amin was a good accordion player, but not a great humanitarian.......

However, Thomas acknowledged that he had begun to worry about the reputation he built as a player, when he led the Detroit Pistons to a pair of NBA titles during a Hall of Fame career.

I guess that being fired by the Raptors, bankrupting the CBA, taking an NBA top 2 club and dropping it to .500, and spending 200% of the salary cap to field a sub-.500 club with the Knicks (while being sued for sexual harassment) might start to dent your rep'.

"I was more concerned about the respect of myself as an individual than I was job security, the what I stood for in the game of basketball and the way my basketball legacy has been," Thomas said. "I didn't want to have a failure here. That was my concern, not necessarily if I was going to have a job."

So, by this analysis, Isiah still sucks as a GM -- the fact that he still has a job does not mean that he is not still a failure.....

FBI Said to Have Accidentally Violated the Patriot Act

http://news.aol.com/topnews/articles/_a/charges-possible-after-patriot-act-audit/20070309032109990001.....................

AG Alberto Gonzales says that there must be consequences for this. Um, why???? It is the Bush Administration's position that the Executive Branch has unfettered power to not follow the 4th Amendment or any statute of the United States.

Given this position, who cares if the FBI sometimes mistakenly invokes the Patriot Act and applies it to domestic matters? What difference does it make? Is the Attorney General suddenly pro-criminal? Does he WANT rampant crime throughout the streets of America? What does he or the allegedly "violated" people have to fear? The FBI is only trying to stomp out crime and help everyone. So, again, why must there be any consequences????? Is AG saying that sometimes the law overrides what the Executive Branch can do? I didn't think so.

Dick Vitale -- Hall of Famer?

http://cbs.sportsline.com/columns/story/10047545/1. I have already stated on the Blog that Vitale would not get my vote. I am not nearly as anti-Vitale as THIS guy is, however.

There are 54 people currently enshrined in the HOF as "contributors" to the game: http://www.hoophall.com/halloffamers/Catagory.htm#contributors. So, you can, in fact, walk from Bird to Magic to (for example) Chick Hearn or Wayne Embry. Wayne Embry, real nice guy, loves the league, never was "great" at any particular thing he ever did. He is in. Calvin Murphy is in as a player -- never a top 3 player on any great team, in the Hall. Maurice Stokes (never a college all-American 1st team, 2 years in the pros) is in the HOF as a player, so is John Wooden (as a player). So let's get off our high horse here.

The only real question is Vitale's importance to the game. Is his contribution to the game so great that it deserves to be recognized. I say no. But I will not deny that it is a close call. Al McGuire and Billy Packer started the college basketball bandwagon, but Vitale was a key element in its initial popularity on ESPN. He clearly loves the game and is a great ambassador for college basketball.

My problem with Vitale is that he never evolved and actually got worse as an announcer. He also goes off on tangents during broadcasts about stuff that has nothing to do with the game at hand. I also cannot stand the thought of Vitale being referred to as "Hall of Famer Dick Vitale."

My advice to the Hall -- table his selection for 5-6 years, and as retirement/death approaches for Dick, maybe that would be a better time to honor his contribution to the game of basketball.

Red-Blue State Breakdown for Idol

If history has taught us anything re: American Idol winners, it is that they come from the states of the old Confederacy: (Kelly -- TX; Ruben -- AL; Fantasia -- NC; Taylor -- AL). The only exception is hardly an exception, as Carrie Underwood is from Oklahoma (a very red state but not a state yet during the Civil War).

So, put a big plus by these names in your Idol prediction pool:

Red & Old Confederacy:
Haley (TX)
Melinda (TN)
Stephanie (GA)
Chris R. (VA)
Chris Sligh (SC)
Phil Stacey (FL)

A small plus by this one:
Jordin (AZ -- red but not a Confed. state and it was a disputed territory during the Civil War)

Place a Minus Next to These Names:
Gina (IL)
Lakisha (MD)
Blake (WA)
Brandon (CA)
Sanjaya (WA)

1,000 Pound Man Leaves House

Kadee Strickland

Praised by my Feb. 28, 2006 Blog entry, this has catapulted her to a starring role on "Wedding Bells" on Fox.

Note to Kadee -- you are welcome!

Ayla Brown -- My Favorite ex-Idol

While Ayla did not make the final 12 last year, she did enroll at BC and was #2 on the team in scoring, rebounds and blocks as a 6' guard.
Note to PM (who will be 6' tall according to his doctor) -- here is the type of girl you should marry. http://www.cstv.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/bc/sports/w-baskbl/auto_pdf/cumulative-stats

American Idol -- Final 16

http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp. These guys have a system that works pretty well, so it looks like Antonella may advance to the final 12!! www.votefortheworst.com will be proud!

General Thoughts -- There are 3 guys with any talent -- Sligh, Richardson and (much as it pains me to say it) beat-boxing Blake Lewis. The other 5 would garner scattered applause at a karaoke bar in their home towns.

If the girls shed Antonella (basically tone deaf as a singer) and Haley (my daughter woke me up after her song) they would have 6 good singers. The problem for the women will be that the "I like a good soulful black female singer" vote will be split ala the LaToya London/Jennifer Hudson/Fantasia vote of season 3.

Ranking the top 16 by talent (not by their chances of winning -- I will save that for next week)

16. Antonella Barba -- really hot, but has a chance to be the worst singer to ever reach the final 6. Her success will be based upon joke votes and people who just want to see the hot girl on the show.

15. Sanjaya -- A terrible, terrible singer. Makes Corey Clark look like Nat King Cole.

14. Jared -- Sort of the Bizzaro-world George Huff. Take all of Huff's fun and energy and reverse it 180 degrees and you have Jared.

13. Haley -- Performs like she wants you to fall asleep or contemplate suicide as she sings. While she actually hits 75% of the notes, you need a Prozac after listening to 90 seconds worth of a song.

12. Brandon -- Not as depressing/off-putting as Haley, but 30 seconds of his performance and we all know that we would not miss him at all.

11. Sundance Head -- even votefortheworst.com has become lukewarm in its support for him. He can actually be OK at times. Scott Savol with a better name (and to my knowledge no history of domestic assault).

10. Phil -- If Michael Stipe had a REALLY REALLY creepy little brother, it would be Phil. The weird hat this week made his eyes look like Gene Wilder on speed.

9. Jordin -- She may be the first victim of the "too many good black girl singers" problem. Plus America doesn't generally vote for 6' tall women (recall the hoops player from last year).

8. Blake Lewis -- I do NOT like him, but if you want someone who can beat-box, moon walk and copy Justin Timberlake every outing, he does that well.

7. Gina -- I think she has talent and energy. With the EXTREMELY thin crop of talent this year, that is enough to place her in my top 7.

6. Chris Richardson -- Josh Gracin without the Marine vote. He will do a good job of doling out country/ballad pap until the going gets really tough.

5. and 4. (tie) -- between Slightly Better Lisa Tucker (Sabrina) and Fake Fantasia (Stephanie). I think that both will be eliminated much sooner than their talent would call for because they will not defeat Lakisha and Melinda for votes, and I don't see them appealing to a different audience.

3. Chris Sligh -- He basically admitted this week that he is coasting -- just trying to stay under the radar and be safe (in an awful group of guys) while saving his better stuff for the top 12. I believe him. He may finish 1st or 2nd.

2. Melinda -- second best talent, but her "What? Me? Good?" act may start to wear very quickly, particularly since she is 29. This could be another Tamyra Gray/Jennifer Hudson early exit waiting to happen.

1. Lakisha -- she is just so talented. She may struggle with different music choices, but if you want to know who the best SINGER is, look no further.

Survey Says --- Kareem #1

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailydime?page=dailydime-GreatestCenters. Hey, I really can't argue with Kareem at #2, but better than Wilt??? Better than Wilt?????? Uh, no.

Russell could have won the contest but where he did not rank #1 on a ballot he generally was placed very low. I tend to side with those who have him lower. A great defensive player on a great overall team. But certainly not the player that Kareem or Wilt were.

Shaq at #4? I'm OK with that.

It would take some very convincing arguments to get me to say that George Mikan (their #9) should not be #5 at the lowest. He dominated games and his teams ALWAYS won the title. Exactly what was he missing? (Side note -- Shaq paid for his funeral -- "Just send me the bill......" Classy move.)

Hakeem (5th) Moses (6th) and David Robinson (8th) -- each has his own appeal and shortcomings, but if I had to vote I'd go Moses 5th, Hakeem 6th, David 7th.

Having Bill Walton on this list is a joke, plain and simple. He had about 2.5 productive seasons. He had one great playoff series against Caldwell Jones and Darryl Dawkins. Um, OK. Is Chauncey Billups the greatest point guard of all-time? Nate Archibald? Compare Walton's MVP season at age 25 with Bob Lanier's season at age 25 -- http://www.basketball-reference.com/labs/comp.cgi?I=waltobi01%3ABill+Walton&y1=1978&C=laniebo01%3ABob+Lanier&y2=1974&s=r&t=g&submit=Compare. Lanier was the better player.

You'd think that I'd be outraged by the Ewing pick at #10, but you look at the "others receiving votes" and you really can't see Willis Reed or Arvydas Sabonis as a top 10 guy. McAdoo and Lanier were great players, but they barely draw any votes. I'm Ok with Ewing over Reed and Sabonis.

Thoughts?

Happy 35th Birthday to.....Shaquille O'Neal

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/onealsh01.html. In 1972 in Newark, New Jersey, Shaq was born. If he were to lift his game back to 2003 levels and stay healthy for 3 more years, Shaq could make a claim to being the second greatest player of all time behind Jordan. As it is, both a 2003 Slam Magazine article and basketball-reference.com have him selected as the 9th best player of all time.
Pictured -- Shaq at his 34th birthday party!

Some numbers and awards:

All star 14 times
Finals MVP 3 times (tied for second best with Duncan and Magic, trails only Jordan's 6)

NBA Titles -- 4
League MVP -- 1 (2 if you count Sporting News)

All-NBA -- 8 1st team selections, 2 second team, 3 third team
Career FG% -- 57%+, 3rd all-time behind Gilmore and Mark West, the next best all-time great player is Jabbar who is 8th

Efficiency Rating -- #2 all-time, behind only Jordan
Blocks -- 8th

Points -- 14th
Points per game -- 7th

Years With 20 Points and 10 rebounds per game -- 13 years, the all-time record. (KG, one of the greatest 20-10 players of all-time, will hit 9 this year, 4 behind Diesel -- overall stats tell you that Shaq is clearly a better player -- http://www.basketball-reference.com/labs/comp.cgi?I=garneke01%3AKevin+Garnett&y1=&C=onealsh01%3AShaquille+O%27Neal&y2=&s=r&t=g&submit=Compare).

Platinum Albums -- 1
Teams Led to the Finals -- 3 (Orlando, Lakers, Miami)

Finals appearances -- 6
Education -- college degree, M.B.A., studying for a doctorate in criminal justice.

Kids -- 5, 4 by his current wife.
The better player while Shaq was at LSU -- Stanley Roberts.

I will never forget seeing him at the Olympic Festival (in 1990). Probably 400 people at Williams Arena in the middle of summer. Watching Travis Ford and Penny Hardaway toss passes to this monster. http://www.usabasketball.com/history/musof_records.html Jimmy Jackson was there, as was Damon Bailey. Shaq was so clearly the best player that it was frightening. He was 40 pounds heavier than any big man and 3 steps faster. He almost finished a dunk off Penny's backboard pass when Shaq took off from the free throw line as the trailer in a 4 on 1. The backboard was moved a couple inches and had to be put back in place before play could start again.

One of my all-time favorite players. Happy birthday big guy........

Ron Artest -- If You Can't Beat Them, Beat Her

The Kings have suspended Artest from team events while they figure out how badly he beat his wife on March 5. Was Ron really at fault, or as Ike Turner would say, was it a case of "The Women's Be Talkin' Too Much."...........................From the Sacramento Bee on-line:

A woman reported the domestic violence incident in a 911 call at 9:23 a.m., according to the Placer County Sheriff's Department. Officials would not confirm the identity of the caller, saying state law prevents them from identifying victims of domestic violence. A witness to Monday's altercation confirmed to The Bee that the incident involved Artest's wife, Kimsha Artest.

Deputies arrived to find Ron Artest waiting on the front lawn of the Loomis residence. He was "very calm, cooperative," said Sgt. Andrew Scott, one of the responding deputies. Officials said the victim "had injuries but she declined medical attention." Scott declined to elaborate on the nature of the injuries.
Scott said deputies arrested Artest on suspicion of domestic violence and of using force or violence to prevent a victim from reporting a crime after they determined through multiple interviews that a crime indeed had occurred. Artest had pushed the reporting party to the floor several times, Scott said, and took the phone from her when she tried to call 911.
At some point, the argument spilled outside, Scott said. Upon arriving, deputies found Artest's Hummer parked out front with a smashed windshield.

Super Bowl Complaints

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0305072fcc11.html. What amazes me about these alleged complaints is the level of sexual detail that the "offended" viewer(s) find in the material they are watching.
The guys with the snickers bar don't just accidentally kiss, but rather one guy starts "with the candy bar obviously serving as an erection..." 9 year olds tell their parents that Prince is obviously imitating masturbation with his guitar. A 9 year old is fixated on finding phallic objects and simulated masturbation in a rock performance??....... Maybe the problem we have here isn't TV???????

Top GM in All of Sports??? Kevin McHale!

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2788149. And this doesn't even COUNT his tremendous work in not getting the Celts that 1st rounder (see three posts ago)!

Not to nit-pick, but this may not be the most well-researched article ever written. Some small problems:

1. Survey gives you huge points if you have improved the overall franchise from right before you got there. Before McHale arrived the Wolves were run by Billy McKinney (fired, now does radio color commentary), Bob Stein (described by one client of mine as "the epitome of the term 'empty suit'") and Jack McCloskey (just playing out the string and basically stealing his money at age 120 or so). The Wolves averaged 60 losses for their first 7 years of existence, the worst such streak ever. The Wolves had owners who were on the verge of insolvency!! The Wolves were then sold to billionaire Glen Taylor and he hired McHale.

Anaolgy: imagine I am a builder. You just won the lottery and have $10,000,000 to spend on a new house plus an option to buy some great land. You are currently living in a one-room shack with termite infestation. Using your cash and land, I get you set up with a decent 6,000 square foot house. After 6 years it starts to completely fall apart and is now just a half notch above the shack you used to live in. Would I be regarded as a great builder?

2. The survey (quite obviously, see Billy King's name up at #3) does not account much for the current state of the franchise. Wolves -- gonna miss the playoffs again. Sixers -- ditto. Wolves -- stuck with numerous bad, unmoveable contract. Sixers -- same.

Analogy: Who has done the best job of fixing and maintaining his car? Well, McHale and King were given a beater with 4 flat tires, no gas and 4 year old oil. Through brilliant management of the vehicle they were able to inflate the tires, put some gas in the tank and get an oil change and filter. But now the car is now about back to the condition they bought it in. Other GM's actually took an OK car, bought NEW tires, serviced the car regularly and the car seems to work better every year. Who has done a better job?

3. I guess that business ethics were not considered. McHale cost his team 3 #1 picks and agreed to a voluntary leave of absence to avoid a suspension, all for signing Joe Smith to an illegal $85MM contract. To my recollection, no other team in any sport as long as I have been alive has been so crippled by the illegal conduct of its GM. McHale is #1???

4. I guess that knowledge of league rules isn't a criteria. The Wolves two or three times in the past couple of years have stated their intention to do things that are clearly barred by league rules:

a) Traded for Marcus Banks thinking they had his "Bird" rights. Even I knew they didn't!! Asked the league for the rights "because we thought we had the rights when we made the deal." Um, no.

b) Told the media that they could trade their #1 pick when it was already promised to the Clippers, leading to yet another league rebuke.

c) Signed Troy Hudson to a deal where he got $33MM if he stayed healthy and $23 million if he didn't. Submitted the deal to the league -- illegal deal under the collective bargaining agreement. Wouldn't you find this out BEFORE signing the deal!?!? To make matters WORSE McHale then signs Huddy to the $33MM deal!!!

So, as long as your business improves, you can be a complete boob and not know jack about how to do your job and that makes you a great manager???? Um, OK.

5. Attendance obviously not a factor. Wolves current in-the-seats attendance (not counting inflated ticket sales claims made by the team) is worse than the team's first 3 years in the league!!!

As Jeff Albertson would say ------------ Worst. Analysis. Ever.

Ann Coulter -- More Thoughts

I grew up in a rural area of upstate NY (one magazine recently ranked it the 14th best rural county in all of the northeast -- my condolensces to all the kids in the trailing counties!!). We used the terms "fag" and "faggot" quite a bit. I am sure that if I lived there, I might still use the terms. Back in 1977-86, the terms basically meant either "effeminate male" or "someone who says something we don't like.".........................................I suggest to John Edwards that he let this one drop (perhaps saying "I will let others comment on those offensive remarks" or some such thing). Here is why: the only way John Edwards can win the Democratic Party's nomination is by getting the votes of people who aren't real offended by the use of the term "fag" or "faggot." The liberal wine and cheese crowd are already set to vote for Clinton or Obama. John Edwards ain't gonna win the NY primary or the CA primary. He needs win win votes in the south and in the midwest. He needs to win votes of people who probably call their friends or co-workers "fag" once or twice a week.................................The remark itself is not damaging to Edwards because it makes no sense. I mean, imagine Coulter saying "Bill Clinton -- fag" or "Al Gore -- fag." Response -- huh? And what is the response that 85% of males are expected to give when called a "fag"? "I am not a fag." But what is the Dem' response? "What an awful word." This is not a vote getter..........................................On The Simpsons (not exactly a conservative favorite) Nelson called Lisa "gay." Lisa's response? Basically implied that Nelson must be gay. It would have been funny for Edwards to say, "With an Adam's apple like that, Ann probably knows a lot about the GLBT commmunity!"............................................. For those of you who have never lived outside of a northern major metropolitan area, I am here to tell you -- that is the real world. Like it or not. Edwards doesn't have much chance to win, but any chance he has depends upon people who see nothing particularly wrong with what Coulter said. He has to let it go.

Ann Coulter Loves Mitt Romney

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaExYKXfOGk&NR. This, combined with her bizarre attack on John Edwards (basically implying that he is gay), gives you some great insight into her bizarre mind and woeful powers of analysis.

Newt Gingrinch -- his time has passed (yes, much as Reagan's had passed around 1976).
Guliani -- too liberal (but see below re Romney)
McCain -- really a Democrat
Romney -- Great b/c he "tricked liberals into voting for him" -- um, couldn't McCain and Guliani say the same thing?

Grinding It Out RE: NBA Draft

http://www.nbadraft.net/draftnotes.asp. Being a Timberwolves fan and watching them lose to lowly Boston, I was reminded that the Wolves still owe Boston a #1 from the acquisition of Ricky Davis and Mark Blount. So, I thought, why not look and see who else has screwed up for the 2007 draft (rumored to be a great draft due to the rule change of forcing high school seniors out of last year's draft).

Some things to look at:

1) Phoenix has Atlanta's pick in the Joe Johnson deal, and they also have Cleveland's pick from the Joe Johnson trade (Phoenix traded the 2006 pick they got from the Hawks (Rajon Rondo) to Boston for the Cavs' #1 this year). The Hawks' pick looks like a top 10 pick. The Cavs pick won't be that great.

2) Atlanta has Indiana's pick. This makes the Hawks' decision to continue to retain Mike Woodson as head coach all the more baffling. If the Hawks had a good coach they would have a better record than Indiana. Therefore, the Hawks would actually draft HIGHER than the pick they traded to the Suns and management would feel basically no heat for the Johnson trade!! But no.........

3) The Timberwolves' giveaway to the Clippers (trading Sam Cassell while getting Marko Jaric back, McHale felt he needed to hand over a #1 as well!!) is a top 10 protected pick through 2011. Given the Wolves' likely free fall for the rest of the year, they seem likely to drop down to a bottom 10 slot. So, the Clips may not get the pick in 2007. Or 2008, or 09, or 10 or 2011. But the Clips can proudly state that they get the pick in 2012 and it is unprotected. Now, since Boston hold a Wolves #1 ONLY AFTER the Clips, if the Wolves can just keep sucking until 2011, the Celtics cannot get the #1 b/c league rules forbid a) trading two consecutive #1s; and b) trading a #1 more than 7 years out. The Celts would get a #2 instead. McHale -- subtle genius.

4) While the Knicks are (remarkably) only 1/2 game out of a playoff spot in the East (they are 28-33), they won't have their own #1 this year b/c the Bulls will have a better record so the Bulls can switch with the Knicks as a result of the Eddy Curry trade.

5) Utah has the rights to a Knicks #1. I think what happened here is the Knicks traded a #1 to Phoenix for Stephon Marbury. The Suns then traded that #1 to Utah in a deal involving Tom Gugliotta's expiring contract. The Knicks can keep their pick away from Utah in 2007, 2008 and 2009 so long as the pick is a pick better than #24, then better than #23, then better than #22. But if nbadraft.net is correct, the pick becomes UNPROTECTED in 2010!?!?!? So, unless the Knicks can become one of the best 8 teams in the legue by 2009, they will lose their 2010 pick, even if it is the top pick in the draft. Wow.

6) Detroit's deal to send Darko Milicic to Orlando for a #1 looks pretty damned good right now for Detroit. The Magic appear(s??) to be in free fall and that pick could keep climbing up into the top 10 (it is top 5 protected).

7) Denver traded for Iverson and demanded that the first #1 they sent to Philly be "top 1" protected. Denver better hope that it doesn't miss the playoffs and draw the #2 spot in the lottery. Losing Kevin Durant would not look real good on the GM's resume.

8) Phoenix just has a sick number of picks in a good draft. The Suns will have 3 #1s and at least a couple #2s.

Finally...............look at the link and look for the names on the board where #1 picks were traded in return for.................Erick Dampier and A. Pavlovic and Eddy Curry and Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric and Jiri Welsch and Tskitishvili and Lamond Murray. 9 #1s basically flushed down the toilet for 8 guys who have never made an all-star team.....once.........ever..........combined........

Anyway, Timberwolves suck so I was just looking at some draft stuff -- thought I'd share.........HM
