Um, Well, "To Each His Own" I Always Say

http://sports.aol.com/story/_a/formula-one-boss-caught-in-nazi-orgy/20080330164609990001 to each his own. To follow, my "to each his own" story.

When I was 16, I was chosen to be a student in a summer program run by the National Science Foundation. There was a guy there named Angelo who was super funny -- the kind of guy in high school whom everyone wanted to hang out with. Angelo decided that everyone needed a nickname. I will not reveal mine, but it was one of the nicer ones. Angelo decided to give this guy Matt (last name sounded like "mayo" -- he owned and constantly wore T-shirts stating "Genius at Work" and one with "e=Mc2" and Einstein's picture stating "Go ahead, just ask me", etc. etc. Matt was a tool.)

Anyway, so Angelo decides that Matt's nickname should be "Veggie." But before he does (as was Angelo's custom) he goes to the person involved and tells them and gives them a chance to nominate a different name. Here is the conversation from the summer of 1981:

A (sounds like Sly Stallone): Hey, Matt. I decided that we are going to use "Veggie" as your nickname.

MM (sounds like a bad imitation of a nerd): Well, I generally have other nicknames that people tend to use.

A: OK, Matt, what d'ya got for me?

MM: "Generally people prefer to call me "Genius" or "Professor" or something like that.

A: That it, Matt?

MM: Yes, or "Mr. Professor."

A: OK, Matt, we are going to go with Veggie instead.

MM: (silence)

A: Matt, anything else ya got?

MM: "Well.........to each his OWN...........I GUEEE-ss."

So his nickname was Veggie.

Other Matt stories:

1) We got a 30 minute break one day and Angelo brought a soccer ball so we played soccer. I am worried that we have played for like an hour, so I start thinking, "Boy, I wish we knew what time it is, but what kind of a tool would wear a watch playing......." Oh!!!!!! "Matt, what time is it?" Immediate look down at giant LED watch -- "12:45."

2) I was Matt's chemistry lab partner. Despite my almost utter indifference and mediocre competence at the task, Matt at the end of the day stated (quite genuinely), "You are the best and nicest lab partner that I have ever had." Sad.....but no doubt true.
