NFL Draft -- Worst All-Time Picks At Each First-Round Slot

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-worstfirstroundpicks042407

Let me tell you a little story about the guy selected at #5 -- Mike Junkin.

When I was at Duke, Junkin played linebacker. Duke was one of the worst defensive teams I have ever seen in my 45 years on this earth. Junkin was their defensive "star." He rarely if ever made a sack, or tackle for loss, and he never forced a turnover. Teams routinely scored 45 a game against Duke. So why was Junkin a #1 pick? Well, he was a heady white kid who had good stats (pretty big, pretty fast), but more importantly.........

Junkin averaged like 19 tackles a game. Now I would go to the games and see him get maybe 3 impressive tackles and 5 where he dragged a guy down after a 7-10 yard gain, so I didn't understand how he got his extra 11 tackles a game. The answer? A friend of mine kept the tackle stats at Duke and he was told that any time Junkin got anywhere near a pile to even get a fingernail near the downed offensive player, that was an "assist" for Junkin. A two-man tackle, went down as an unassisted Junkin tackle. So, in other words, Duke just put out completely false information and at least one team (Cleveland) was dumb enough to buy it.
